Salisbury, Maryland – Travel across Maryland’s Eastern Shore could become impossible by midafternoon as a blizzard drops up to 16 inches of snow and sends coastal wind gusts as high as 60 mph through 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, a Blizzard Warning remains in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 7 p.m. Monday for Dorchester, Wicomico, Somerset and Worcester counties, including the Maryland Beaches. Snow will intensify late today, with the heaviest bands developing tonight into Monday. Snowfall rates may exceed 2 inches per hour at times, while sustained winds of 45 to 50 mph create widespread blowing snow and near-zero visibility.

Major routes including U.S. 50, U.S. 13 and Route 113 are expected to deteriorate rapidly, especially on exposed stretches near Cambridge and along the Ocean City coastline. Conditions are likely to severely impact both the Monday morning and evening commutes.

Strong winds combined with heavy snow could snap tree limbs and down power lines, leading to scattered outages across the Eastern Shore. Officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, secure loose outdoor items and prepare for extended time indoors. If travel is unavoidable, carry a winter survival kit and call 511 for updated road conditions.

Snow and strong winds will persist into Monday evening before gradually tapering. The Blizzard Warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. Monday.
