Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands – Torrential tropical rainbands could trigger flash flooding across Saipan and Tinian beginning tonight as Tropical Depression Nuri passes near the Mariana Islands.

According to the National Weather Service in Tiyan, Guam, a Flood Watch is in effect through Friday afternoon for Saipan and Tinian as bands of heavy tropical rainfall spread across the region.

Newly formed Tropical Depression Nuri (03W) is currently northwest of Yap and is expected to track northeast while passing near the Marianas over the next couple of days. The system is interacting with a stalled frontal boundary and another disturbance nearby, creating a broad zone of unsettled weather capable of producing repeated lines of heavy showers.

Forecasters say 5 to 8 inches of rainfall is possible between Wednesday night and Friday afternoon, especially if the center of the tropical system tracks closer to the islands. Intense rain bands have already begun forming upstream of the system and may move across the islands in waves.

Low-lying roads, small streams, and poor drainage areas in Saipan and Tinian could flood quickly if heavier rain bands stall over the islands. Officials urge residents to monitor weather alerts and avoid flooded roadways.

The flood threat will continue through Friday as the tropical system moves through the region. Additional flash flood warnings may be issued if rainfall intensifies or water levels rise rapidly.
