Saint Albans, West Virginia – A late-night street race in Saint Albans ended in two crashes and multiple arrests, prompting DUI and fleeing charges, authorities said.
According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, a deputy observed two yellow Chevrolet Camaros traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on MacCorkle Avenue SW around 11 p.m. Saturday. The vehicles were allegedly engaged in street racing.
When the deputy activated emergency lights and a siren, both vehicles accelerated and continued westbound through the Winfield Road intersection, deputies said.
One vehicle, operated by William Aiden Wallace, 22, of Hurricane, allegedly crashed just before Riverview Drive. The second vehicle, driven by Caleb Dayle Robinett, 20, of Huntington, continued at a high rate of speed before crashing into a tree near Browns Creek Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
Deputies reported detecting a strong odor of alcohol while making contact with Wallace, who was allegedly stumbling and slurring his speech. After being advised of his Miranda rights, Wallace admitted to consuming three “vodka Red Bulls,” authorities said. A breath sample indicated a blood alcohol concentration of 0.098, and Wallace also allegedly showed signs of impairment during standardized field sobriety tests.
Both individuals were transported to South Central Regional Jail and later arraigned by a Kanawha County magistrate.
Wallace was charged with fleeing while DUI, and his bond was set at $2,500 cash, property, or surety. Robinett was charged with fleeing with reckless indifference, with bond set at $2,000 cash, property, or surety, according to authorities.
No additional injuries were reported.
The incident occurred along a heavily traveled corridor frequently used by late-night commuters and young drivers.
All suspects are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.
