Sacramento, CA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for portions of Northern California, including the Sierra Nevada, from 4 a.m. Wednesday to 4 p.m. Thursday, with significant snowfall expected at higher elevations.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Sacramento, snowfall will affect areas above 5,000 feet, with accumulations ranging from 3 to 7 inches between 5,000 and 6,000 feet. Higher elevations above 6,000 feet, particularly south of Interstate 80, could see between 10 and 16 inches of snow.
The storm is expected to create hazardous travel conditions, particularly in Burney Basin, Eastern Shasta County, and Western Plumas County, including Lassen Park. Motorists traveling through the West Slope of the Northern Sierra Nevada should prepare for chain controls, slick roads, and potential travel delays.
Commuters and travelers in the region should exercise caution as road conditions may worsen from Wednesday morning into Thursday evening. The storm could impact key travel routes, including I-80 and Highway 50, with the possibility of intermittent closures or restrictions.
Officials urge residents and travelers to check road conditions before heading out. Updates on California roadways can be found on Caltrans’ QuickMap website at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or by dialing 511.
Drivers are advised to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles, and carry emergency supplies, including blankets and food, in case of unexpected delays.
