Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm is set to impact Northern California, bringing heavy snowfall and strong winds to mountainous regions through Thursday night. Travel conditions are expected to be hazardous, with road closures, chain controls, and reduced visibility.
According to the National Weather Service, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 11 p.m. Tuesday to 11 p.m. Thursday for elevations above 3,000 feet in Shasta, Colusa, and Plumas counties. Snowfall totals could reach 12 inches in lower elevations, with up to 4 feet possible over higher peaks. Winds may gust as high as 65 mph, creating near-whiteout conditions.
In the Sierra Nevada and Western Plumas County, the storm will intensify through Wednesday evening, with some areas expecting accumulations between 1 and 3 feet. Wind gusts of up to 65 mph could cause tree damage and power outages. Meanwhile, Siskiyou County, including Mount Shasta and Dunsmuir, will see snow totals of up to 18 inches at higher elevations, with wind gusts up to 50 mph.
Authorities advise residents to avoid travel if possible and to prepare for potential power outages. Motorists should check Caltrans road conditions at quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call 511 before traveling. Emergency kits, including flashlights, food, and water, are recommended for those on the road.
