Sacramento, CA – A powerful winter storm continues to impact Northern California’s higher elevations, creating hazardous travel conditions through Tuesday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 11 p.m. Tuesday for areas above 3,000 feet, including the western slopes of the Northern Sierra Nevada and regions near Shasta Lake. Snow totals could reach 1 to 4 feet, with up to 5 feet possible over Sierra peaks and up to 2 to 4 feet in the Shasta County mountains. Gusts could hit 65 mph, especially over exposed ridges.

The heaviest snow is expected Monday, with snowfall rates of up to 2 inches per hour. Snow levels will gradually drop from 5,000–6,500 feet early Monday to around 3,000 feet by Tuesday morning.

Travel will likely be very difficult to impossible, particularly during the Monday evening and Tuesday morning commutes. Blowing snow will reduce visibility, and strong winds may damage trees and power lines.

Residents in Blue Canyon, Quincy, Chester, Alder Springs, and Shasta Dam should avoid unnecessary travel. Caltrans advises drivers to check quickmap.dot.ca.gov or call 511 for real-time road conditions.
