Sacramento, CA – Drivers across the Sacramento Valley and Sierra Nevada should prepare for scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms and periods of mountain snow Thursday, potentially creating slick roads during the morning and evening commutes.

According to the US National Weather Service Sacramento, a weather system moving through Northern California will bring valley rain showers, isolated thunderstorms and light to moderate snow in the mountains throughout the day. Forecasters released simulated reflectivity timing early Thursday morning showing bands of precipitation developing across the Sacramento Valley, Bay Area and Sierra.

Rain showers are expected to remain scattered in lower elevations, including Sacramento, Stockton and surrounding communities in Sacramento County and the greater Central Valley. While rainfall totals are not expected to be extreme, brief downpours could reduce visibility and create ponding on roadways.

In the Sierra Nevada, including areas near Donner Pass and Echo Summit, light to moderate snowfall could lead to slick travel conditions, especially during heavier bursts. Motorists traveling along Interstate 80 and Highway 50 should allow extra time and be prepared for changing conditions.

Isolated thunderstorms are also possible Thursday afternoon, which could produce brief heavy rain, gusty winds and small hail.

Officials urge drivers to slow down when encountering wet or snow-covered roads and to maintain extra following distance. Conditions may change quickly as showers move through.
