Sacramento, California – Temperatures are set to plunge to 28 degrees by 4 a.m. Friday across parts of the Sacramento Valley, creating freeze conditions that could damage crops and leave icy patches on area roadways before the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, a Freeze Warning remains in effect from midnight until 9 a.m. Friday for much of the northern Sacramento Valley, including Sacramento, Chico, Redding and surrounding agricultural communities. Forecast lows range from 20 to 32 degrees in valley and foothill locations, with some mountain areas dropping into the single digits and teens.
Hard freeze conditions are expected north of Sacramento along the I-5 corridor through Redding and near Highway 99 from Chico south toward Modesto. Sensitive crops, blooming trees and unprotected irrigation systems face potential damage after several consecutive hours below freezing.
Communities still without power from recent storms, particularly in foothill areas east of Highway 49, may experience dangerous indoor temperatures by daybreak. Cold-sensitive pets should be brought indoors, and residents should check on elderly neighbors and those without adequate heating.
Drivers heading out before 9 a.m. Friday should watch for isolated icy spots on bridges and overpasses along I-5, Highway 50 and Highway 99, especially where residual moisture remains.
Temperatures will gradually rebound late Friday morning, but another cold night is possible heading into the weekend. Additional freeze advisories could be issued if clear skies and light winds persist.
