Sacramento, California – A powerful winter storm is expected to bring heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions to the Sierra Nevada and Southern Cascades, with the most severe impacts occurring Wednesday through Friday, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.

A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for the Sierra and Southern Cascades above 4,500 feet from 10 p.m. Tuesday through 10 p.m. Friday. Forecast totals indicate up to 10 feet of snow above 4,500 feet, with 4 to 8 feet possible above 5,500 feet, and locally higher amounts in favored terrain.

The Shasta County and Coast Range mountains above 3,500 feet are also under a Winter Storm Warning from 4 p.m. Wednesday through 10 p.m. Friday, where up to 10 feet of snow is possible at higher elevations.

Strong winds will compound impacts, with gusts up to 60 mph, leading to near-whiteout conditions, blowing snow, and drifting. Officials warn of major travel delays, chain controls, and potential road closures, especially along mountain highways and passes.

The most affected period will be Wednesday through Friday, when snowfall rates and wind speeds are expected to be highest. Holiday travel through the Sierra is highly discouraged during this time.

Travelers are urged to delay trips if possible, carry winter survival supplies, and monitor Caltrans and weather.gov for the latest updates.
