Sacramento, California — Dense fog is developing across the Sacramento area and much of the Central Valley early this morning, prompting a Dense Fog Advisory that remains in effect through 10 a.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Sacramento, fog has become widespread across the Central Valley and Delta, with visibility dropping to one-quarter mile or less in several locations. Observations around 3:30 a.m. showed pockets of extremely low visibility, creating hazardous travel conditions.
The fog is expected to persist through the morning commute, especially along Interstate 5, Highway 99, and rural roadways, where sudden drops in visibility may occur with little warning. Conditions may vary sharply over short distances.
Forecasters emphasize that dense fog significantly increases the risk of rear-end collisions and multi-vehicle crashes, particularly at higher speeds. Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and allow extra following distance.
Visibility is expected to gradually improve later this morning as fog lifts, but localized dense patches may linger beyond advisory expiration in some low-lying areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor real-time conditions through official weather sources and delay travel if possible until visibility improves.
This alert is especially relevant for morning commuters, school transportation, commercial drivers, and agricultural workers, as peak travel overlaps with the worst fog conditions.
