Burlington, Vermont – Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across much of Vermont and portions of northern New York as snowfall intensifies today, creating difficult travel conditions, especially during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, snow is expected to overspread the region today, with briefly heavy snowfall developing late this afternoon and evening. Snowfall rates may exceed 1 inch per hour at times, significantly reducing visibility and making roads snow-covered quickly.

Advisories are in effect beginning 10 a.m. today through 7 a.m. Wednesday for St. Lawrence Valley and the northern Adirondacks, and 2 p.m. today through 7 a.m. Wednesday for Clinton County in New York and most of Vermont. Forecasters warn that travel will be hazardous at times, particularly during the evening commute window.

Snowfall totals are expected to range from 3 to 6 inches, with locally higher amounts in mountainous terrain, including the Green Mountains and portions of the Adirondacks. Valleys may see slightly lower totals, but brief bursts of heavy snow could still lead to rapid accumulation.

Major roadways including Interstate 89, Interstate 91, Interstate 87, and U.S. Route 7 are expected to be impacted. Snow-covered roads, reduced visibility, and slick conditions will make travel slower and more dangerous, especially during peak commuting hours.

The National Weather Service urges motorists to allow extra travel time, reduce speeds, and keep a safe distance between vehicles. Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions, particularly where snowfall rates intensify.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve late tonight into Wednesday morning as snowfall tapers off from west to east. However, untreated roads may remain slippery into the morning commute.

Residents are encouraged to monitor local updates and heed advisory guidance until the storm exits the region.
