RUTLAND, Vt. – A significant winter storm is poised to bring heavy snow and hazardous travel to central and southern Vermont beginning Tuesday morning and continuing through late Tuesday night. The National Weather Service in Burlington has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Orange, Rutland, Addison, and Windsor counties, where snowfall totals could exceed 7 inches.

According to the National Weather Service, the heaviest snow is expected to arrive by mid-morning Tuesday, with snowfall rates surpassing an inch per hour at times. Travel across routes such as I-89, Route 4, and Route 7 may quickly deteriorate as snow accumulates and visibility drops. Both the Tuesday morning and evening commutes are expected to be impacted by snow-covered roads and reduced visibility.

Cold air moving in behind the system will keep snow powdery but persistent, and gusty winds could create areas of blowing snow in open valleys. Drivers are urged to avoid unnecessary travel, keep emergency kits in vehicles, and allow extra time for snow removal.

Snow is expected to taper off late Tuesday night, but slippery conditions will linger into Wednesday morning.
