Clarendon, VT – A vehicle pursuit through Clarendon Tuesday night ended with a 55-year-old Vermont man taken into custody after allegedly fleeing a traffic stop and showing signs of impairment, according to the Rutland County Sheriff’s Office.

According to deputies, the incident began around 7:42 p.m. when Deputy Alan Frasier observed a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lane of Route 7 near the intersection of Vermont Route 103. The driver reportedly stopped briefly before allegedly reentering the vehicle and fleeing southbound on Route 103.

Deputies followed the vehicle for nearly half a mile before it came to a stop, the Sheriff’s Office said. While attempting to make contact, additional signs of impairment were observed. As deputies ordered the driver to exit, he allegedly attempted to put the vehicle back into drive multiple times. Officers ultimately removed the man from the vehicle and took him into custody.

The Sheriff’s Office identified the driver as Charles P. Kendall, described as transient within Vermont. Records showed Kendall’s driving privilege is currently suspended due to a previous DUI conviction, authorities said. Deputies also reported that Kendall was out on conditions of release requiring him not to drive and not to consume alcohol.

Kendall was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center, where a blood sample was collected for analysis by the Vermont Forensic Laboratory. He was later lodged at Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility on $10,000 bail.

Kendall is scheduled to appear in court at a later date to answer to charges including eluding an officer, grossly negligent operation, driving under the influence, impeding an officer, resisting arrest, and violating conditions of release.
