Rutherford County, TN – A local woman narrowly avoided losing $2,600 after a scammer posing as a sheriff’s lieutenant tried to convince her she faced arrest warrants for missing jury duty, according to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.

The scammer, who identified himself as “Lt. Stewart,” allegedly told the woman she could avoid arrest by sending $2,600 through Zelle or Venmo. To appear credible, he used the name of Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Keith Lowery during the call.

“Law enforcement will not call you and ask you for money,” Lowery said.

Fortunately, the woman personally knew Lowery and called him directly instead of sending the payment. The scammer allegedly warned her not to contact the Sheriff’s Office, claiming it was a “confidential matter” and threatening arrest if she did.

Lowery immediately confirmed the call was a scam, saving the woman from a costly loss.

Officials are reminding residents that legitimate law enforcement agencies will never demand payment over the phone or threaten arrest.

“If you get a call like this, hang up,” the Sheriff’s Office urged.
