Murfreesboro, Tenn. — Two people were injured early Monday after a sedan crashed into a patrol SUV at an Interstate 24 crash scene, pushing the vehicle into a nearby fire engine.
According to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office, emergency crews were already responding to an earlier incident involving an overturned semi-truck when the secondary crash occurred around 1 a.m. Monday on I-24 between Interstate 840 and Almaville Road.
Sheriff’s Cpl. Riley Dunninger reported that a white sedan traveling at a high rate of speed allegedly struck the rear of Deputy Tyler Purvis’ patrol SUV, which was positioned in Lane 3 blocking traffic at the initial crash site.
The impact pushed the patrol SUV forward, causing it to collide with Rutherford County Fire Rescue Engine 60, which was parked directly in front of the deputy’s vehicle as part of the emergency response.
The driver and passenger in the sedan suffered injuries and were transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for treatment of what officials described as serious injuries.
Authorities said the deputy and other emergency responders were not injured, though Rutherford County Emergency Medical Services paramedics evaluated them at the scene as a precaution.
Officials confirmed that both the patrol SUV and Fire Rescue Engine 60 sustained significant damage in the collision.
Rutherford County Fire Rescue Chief Larry Farley said the crash highlights the importance of drivers slowing down and moving over when approaching emergency scenes.
Under Tennessee’s Move Over Law, motorists must slow down and move to an adjacent lane when possible when approaching emergency vehicles with flashing lights.
The incident caused disruptions along the interstate while crews managed both crash scenes.
The roadway is a major commuter corridor connecting Rutherford County to the Nashville area, frequently used by early-morning workers and students traveling between communities.
