Roswell, New Mexico – Slick travel conditions and dangerously low visibility are affecting parts of southeast New Mexico early Sunday as freezing fog develops across the Pecos Valley and adjacent areas, impacting travel along major routes including U.S. Highway 285, U.S. 70, and U.S. 380.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, freezing fog has developed overnight in areas including Santa Rosa, Clovis, and the Roswell vicinity. A Freezing Fog Advisory remains in effect through 8 a.m. MST, with visibility expected to drop to less than one-quarter mile in some locations.

Forecasters warn that freezing fog poses a dual hazard. In addition to sharply reduced visibility, the fog can deposit a thin glaze of ice on roadways, bridges, overpasses, and other exposed surfaces. These icy patches may be difficult to see, particularly before sunrise, increasing the risk of vehicle skids and crashes.

Roadways most vulnerable include US-285 through Roswell, US-70 between Roswell and Clovis, US-84 across the eastern plains, and secondary rural roads where traffic volumes are lower and treatment may be limited. The National Weather Service notes that slick spots may persist even after visibility begins to improve.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and use low-beam headlights when traveling through fog. Sudden reductions in visibility are possible, especially near low-lying areas, waterways, and open farmland.

Conditions are expected to gradually improve later Sunday morning as temperatures rise and fog dissipates. However, forecasters express high confidence that freezing fog will redevelop during overnight and early morning hours through the coming week, potentially repeating travel hazards.

Motorists should plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and check local road conditions before departing. The National Weather Service emphasizes that freezing fog is one of the most deceptive winter hazards due to its rapid onset and limited visibility.
