Roswell, New Mexico – Dangerous cold and freezing fog conditions are expected across parts of eastern and southeastern New Mexico late tonight into Tuesday morning, prompting a Cold Weather Advisory and travel concerns.
According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, overnight low temperatures are forecast to fall between 0 and 15 degrees, with wind chills ranging from 5 below zero to 5 degrees. These conditions increase the risk of hypothermia, frostbite, and frozen pipes.
Forecasters warn that freezing fog is likely to develop late tonight, especially across southeast New Mexico, including the Pecos River Valley near Roswell and Hagerman. The fog may significantly reduce visibility and create slick spots on roads, bridges, and other elevated surfaces.
The Cold Weather Advisory covers east-central and southeast New Mexico, while freezing fog impacts are expected to be most pronounced during the early Tuesday morning commute. Officials caution that visibility may change rapidly, making travel hazardous.
In Albuquerque and surrounding central New Mexico communities, temperatures will remain well below normal, with morning lows in the single digits to teens and wind chills near zero by daybreak Tuesday.
The National Weather Service urges residents to limit overnight travel if possible, dress in warm layers, and take steps to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes. Drivers encountering freezing fog are advised to slow down and allow extra stopping distance.
These conditions may be especially impactful for early-morning commuters, school transportation, and agricultural operations across eastern New Mexico.
