Roselle, Ill. — The Village of Roselle Board of Trustees approved new regulations for e-bikes at a meeting on the night of June 23. The new regulations were posted on Facebook and the Village website.
Operators of e-bikes with motor assistance must be 16 years or older. Riders under 16 may use Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes, which have pedal power only. It is required by state law that a Class 3 e-bike — with motor assistance — must be operated by drivers of at least 16. Additionally, only pedal power e-bikes may be used on Village bike paths. E-bikes may not be operated on sidewalks.
Low-speed e-scooters are required to be operated by drivers 18 years or older. E-scooters are permitted on streets where the speed limit is less than 35 miles per hour. The Village also said only one rider is allowed on an e-scooter at a time.
All bicycles and e-bikes are required to follow the rules of the road. Citations include a minimum $35 fine and could require an adjudication hearing at Village Hall. Parents and guardians are not allowed to permit minors under their care to break any e-bike regulations. The Roselle Police Department has the right to fine riders and their parents or guardians.
