Denver, CO – Early October is shaping up to be chilly and unsettled across the Rocky Mountains, with spotty mountain snowfall and continued frost and freeze alerts possible, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).

The latest NWS outlooks, issued Friday, show above-normal precipitation chances in parts of the Rockies from October 2 through October 6, with conditions turning closer to average by the second week of the month. Higher elevations in Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana could see light snowfall during this period, while valleys and foothills face a higher risk of frost during overnight hours.

According to the NWS, temperatures are expected to trend above average across much of the western United States into early October. However, clear skies and cooler nighttime conditions could still trigger widespread frost and freeze alerts in mountain valleys, particularly in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming. These conditions could affect late-season crops, gardens, and outdoor water systems.

By the October 4–10 window, the precipitation outlook favors drier conditions across much of the central Rockies, but the NWS notes that spotty showers and light snow remain possible at higher elevations. Temperatures will continue to run warmer than average for much of the region, though the cool nighttime pattern is expected to persist.

Residents in mountain communities are advised to monitor local forecasts for updated frost and freeze alerts. Travelers through mountain passes should also prepare for occasional slick spots from light snow or frost as the first full week of October unfolds.
