Billings, MT – Dangerous winds are sweeping across the Northern and Central Rockies, with High Wind Warnings in effect through Thursday and Friday for parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Washington, and northern Idaho, according to multiple National Weather Service offices.

Forecasters warn of widespread gusts between 60 and 90 mph, with the strongest winds along mountain passes, open plains, and foothill regions. Areas under warnings include Judith Gap, the Madison River Valley, Great Falls, Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper, Rock Springs, the Lower Columbia Basin in Washington, and the Northern Front Range Foothills of Colorado.

The National Weather Service in Great Falls reports winds up to 90 mph along the Rocky Mountain Front near Choteau and Browning, while southern Montana and northern Wyoming are seeing gusts topping 70 mph. In Colorado’s Front Range, including Estes Park and Berthoud Pass, gusts near 80 mph could down trees and power lines.

Officials warn that travel could be extremely difficult for high-profile vehicles, including semis and campers. “Use caution if traveling,” meteorologists said. “Secure loose outdoor items and avoid mountain passes if possible.”

In Wyoming, the National Weather Service in Cheyenne reports sustained winds of 45 to 55 mph with gusts up to 80 mph, creating dangerous crosswinds on Interstate 25 and Interstate 80. Power outages and blowing debris are possible throughout the corridor.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor equipment, monitor local alerts, and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of high wind. Conditions are expected to improve gradually late Thursday into Friday.
