Denver, Colorado – Travel through Colorado’s mountain corridors could quickly turn hazardous by the evening commute as snow and strong winds move in by 6 p.m., impacting key routes including Rabbit Ears Pass and stretches of I-70.
According to the National Weather Service in Denver/Boulder, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 6 p.m. tonight through 3 a.m. Friday for the Park and Gore Ranges. Snowfall totals between 3 and 8 inches are expected, with the heaviest accumulation near Rabbit Ears Pass. Wind gusts could reach up to 50 mph, creating blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.
Drivers along I-70, including areas near Winter Park, Vail Pass, and Berthoud Pass, may encounter slick roads and sudden visibility drops during heavier bursts of snow. A few inches of accumulation are also possible along the I-70 corridor itself, increasing the risk of spinouts and slowdowns.
Officials warn that conditions will deteriorate quickly after sunset, with the most significant impacts occurring overnight. Travelers are urged to avoid non-essential trips, carry winter emergency supplies, and check road conditions through CDOT before heading into the mountains.
Snow and wind impacts are expected to ease after 3 a.m. Friday, but lingering slick spots may continue into the early morning hours.
