Rockford, Illinois – Drivers across northern Illinois should prepare for deteriorating road conditions tonight as accumulating snow spreads in and intensifies near the Wisconsin state line, creating hazardous travel through early Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect from Tuesday evening through early Wednesday morning for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, and Lake counties. Snow develops after sunset and continues overnight, with totals ranging from 2 to 5 inches. The highest amounts are expected closest to the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

Communities including Rockford, Belvidere, Woodstock, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Waukegan, Gurnee, Mundelein, and Algonquin are likely to see snow-covered roads overnight. Conditions may worsen quickly as snowfall rates increase late this evening, impacting travel along I-90, I-39, US-12, and other major corridors. Bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads are expected to become slick.

The snow may linger into the early part of the Wednesday morning commute, leading to reduced speeds and longer travel times. Motorists are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and allow extra time to reach destinations.

Road conditions can be checked through the Illinois Department of Transportation travel map. Snow tapers off by daybreak, but slick spots could persist into mid-morning, especially in areas that receive heavier snowfall overnight.
