Rockford, IL – Severe flash flooding in Rockford, Illinois, has led to a night of dramatic rescues by the Rockford Fire Department. Between 11 PM on Saturday and 6 AM on Sunday, the department responded to over 120 calls for service, providing critical assistance during the extreme weather event.

According to the Rockford Fire Department, crews worked tirelessly to rescue individuals trapped in flooded and stalled vehicles, conduct welfare checks for citizens trapped by rapidly rising floodwaters, extinguish a detached garage fire within the flooded area, and address a structural collapse caused by the flood. The floodwaters impacted a large portion of the Keith Creek corridor, but localized flooding was reported across the city.

Citizens are urged to stay out of all flooded areas and avoid driving through submerged roadways. Waters in certain areas remain high, posing a significant risk to those attempting to traverse them. The fire department’s efforts included working under adverse conditions, such as operating in two feet of water and heavy downpours. Their dedication to prioritizing calls based on urgency likely saved many lives.

Keith Creek’s overflow and the ongoing danger highlight the need for caution and community cooperation. Residents are advised to heed warnings and avoid flooded zones to ensure safety during this perilous time.
