Rock Hill, NY – Firefighters from across Sullivan County were called to Holiday Mountain Ski Area early Friday morning after smoke was reported inside a newly constructed lodge, prompting a working fire response and multiple mutual aid agencies.
According to the Rock Hill Fire Department, crews were dispatched at approximately 7:26 a.m. to a reported structure fire at Holiday Mountain, located in the Town of Thompson near Monticello. The first arriving unit found smoke coming from the new “River Lodge,” a roughly 20-by-50-foot wood-framed building.
Rock Hill firefighters responded with two engines, a tanker, and a heavy rescue unit. Interior crews initially encountered heavy smoke conditions with no visible flames. The fire was later traced to the building’s truss space, where it had spread above the ceiling.
A working fire assignment was transmitted, bringing mutual aid from Monticello Fire Department, the Town of Bethel FASTeam, Rock Hill EMS, Sullivan County EMS ALS, the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire Investigators, and the New York State Electric and Gas utility. Wurtsboro Fire Department was initially assigned to standby coverage at Rock Hill.
Additional departments, including Fallsburg and Woodridge, were directed to Rock Hill for standby after clearing another early-morning fire in Monticello. Wurtsboro Fire Department was later moved directly to the scene, while Summitville Fire Department provided district coverage.
Firefighters were forced to open the ceiling along the full length of the lodge to isolate and extinguish the concealed fire. All units were able to return to service by approximately 11:00 a.m.
No injuries were reported. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by Sullivan County fire investigators.
