Rochester, MN – Strong winds are expected to develop across Rochester and surrounding communities Thursday afternoon, prompting a Wind Advisory as gusts increase enough to affect travel, utilities, and outdoor items.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, a Wind Advisory is in effect from noon to 6 p.m. CST Thursday for portions of southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. West winds are forecast to reach sustained speeds near 30 miles per hour, with gusts climbing to around 45 mph during the afternoon.
In Minnesota, the advisory includes Olmsted, Dodge, Mower, and Fillmore counties, impacting cities such as Rochester, Dodge Center, Austin, and Preston. In northeast Iowa, the advisory covers Floyd, Mitchell, Chickasaw, and Howard counties, including Charles City, Osage, Cresco, and New Hampton.
Forecasters warn that gusty winds could blow around unsecured outdoor objects, including holiday decorations, trash bins, and lightweight furniture. Small tree limbs may be blown down, which could result in isolated power outages in some areas.
Travel conditions may become challenging, particularly for high-profile vehicles such as semi-trucks, delivery vans, recreational vehicles, and vehicles towing trailers. Drivers are urged to use extra caution on open roadways, where sudden crosswinds may make steering difficult.
Residents are encouraged to secure loose outdoor items before winds increase Thursday afternoon and to remain alert for falling debris. Those with afternoon travel plans should allow extra time and be prepared for changing conditions.
Winds are expected to gradually ease Thursday evening after the advisory expires, though breezy conditions may linger overnight. The National Weather Service recommends monitoring updated forecasts and local alerts in case wind conditions change or additional advisories are issued.
