Rochester, N.Y. — A Rochester man is facing federal charges after allegedly contacting and exploiting a 14-year-old through Tinder, prompting a multi-agency investigation.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and federal prosecutors, 32-year-old Tristan Bass-Krueger allegedly communicated with the minor through Tinder before continuing conversations on WhatsApp. Investigators say the exchanges were sexual in nature and included explicit images.

Authorities said the case began on Wednesday, Feb. 12, when a parent reported concerns that her child had been communicating with an adult and may have had a sexual relationship with him. Investigators later reviewed the minor’s phone and identified the suspect through account activity and messages.

According to court documents, Bass-Krueger allegedly picked up the minor from her home earlier in February and spent several hours with her before returning her. Investigators also allege that messages between the two included discussions about deleting communications and concealing their interactions.

Further evidence reviewed by investigators included messages the minor allegedly sent to a friend describing sexual contact, as well as a video that authorities say was found on the minor’s device.

Bass-Krueger was arrested Wednesday in Atlanta, Georgia, following coordination between local and federal agencies, including Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York.

He faces charges including enticement of a minor, production, distribution, and possession of child pornography. If convicted, he could face up to life in prison and significant financial penalties.

The University of Rochester said Bass-Krueger, a PhD student, is no longer permitted on campus and had not been living there.

The case underscores ongoing risks tied to online platforms and communication apps, particularly for teens and young users.
