Rochester, NH – A convicted sex offender who allegedly fled New Hampshire in 2022 has been arrested in North Carolina after failing to report his status for nearly three years.

According to the New Hampshire State Police, 65-year-old Gary Dean was taken into custody in High Point, North Carolina, and extradited back to New Hampshire this week. Dean, a tier III offender, is required to register quarterly but allegedly stopped reporting after leaving Rochester in 2022.

Investigators said Dean began registering in 2017 following his release from the New Hampshire State Prison, where he served 30 years for a 1985 conviction of aggravated felonious sexual assault and robbery. Detectives learned that Dean not only failed to register in New Hampshire but also failed to report his presence in North Carolina, as required by law.

Dean was arrested by the High Point Police Department with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service and charged with six felony counts of duty to report. Authorities said he was transported back to New Hampshire after waiving extradition on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2025, and is scheduled to be arraigned in Rochester Circuit Court on Thursday, Nov. 6, 2025.
