Buffalo, New York – A Cold Weather Advisory is in effect across all of western and north-central New York from 7 PM tonight through 10 AM Friday, as dangerously low wind chills settle into the region, according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo.
Forecasters expect wind chill values of 15 to 20 degrees below zero across much of western New York, with even colder readings approaching 30 below zero possible in parts of north-central New York. These conditions significantly increase the risk of frostbite, which can occur on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes or less.
The coldest conditions are expected overnight and during the early Friday morning commute, when winds will combine with already frigid air temperatures. Major travel corridors including Interstate 90, Interstate 190, Interstate 290, and Interstate 490 may see hazardous conditions for motorists due to extreme cold, especially for those experiencing vehicle issues or delays.
While widespread snowfall is not expected during this advisory period, the cold alone presents a serious public safety concern. Emergency officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple warm layers, and ensure hats, gloves, and face coverings are worn if venturing outside. Pet owners are also encouraged to bring animals indoors and check on livestock and outdoor water sources.
The National Weather Service advises checking home heating systems and ensuring space heaters are used safely. Drivers should carry winter emergency kits, including blankets, charged phones, and extra supplies, in case of breakdowns.
Temperatures are expected to gradually moderate later Friday, but cold conditions will linger into the weekend. Additional cold weather advisories may be issued if wind chill values remain dangerously low.
Residents are urged to monitor weather.gov, local media, and official National Weather Service updates for the latest information as conditions evolve.
