Rochester, Minnesota – Fires could ignite and spread within minutes across southeast Minnesota by Saturday afternoon as wind gusts near 40 mph combine with extremely dry air.
According to the National Weather Service in La Crosse, south winds will strengthen between late morning and early evening Saturday, with gusts reaching 30 to 40 mph across southeast Minnesota and northeast Iowa. Humidity levels are expected to drop sharply, creating conditions where even a small spark can trigger a fast-moving grass fire.
The highest risk centers on Rochester and surrounding counties, extending south toward Charles City and east toward La Crosse. Open fields and rural areas face the greatest danger, especially along corridors like U.S. Highway 52 and Interstate 90 where crosswinds can accelerate fire spread. Dubuque and nearby communities remain under an elevated risk, with similar dry fuels in place.
Emergency managers urge residents to avoid outdoor burning entirely and secure equipment that could spark, including chains and machinery. Even discarded cigarettes could ignite dry grasses.
These conditions are expected to peak Saturday afternoon before easing after sunset, but additional advisories could follow if dry weather persists into the weekend.
