Robert, LA – Water from the Tangipahoa River is spilling into low-lying areas near Robert Tuesday afternoon, pushing the river above flood stage and threatening portions of Highway 22 as minor flooding continues across Tangipahoa Parish.

According to the National Weather Service in New Orleans, the Tangipahoa River near Robert reached 16.9 feet by 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, well above the 15-foot flood stage. The river is expected to gradually fall below flood stage by Wednesday morning, but water will continue affecting nearby low spots until levels recede later in the day.

When the river reaches around 17 feet, water begins covering low areas along Highway 22 south of Robert, creating hazardous driving conditions. Officials warn the river could also approach the entrance of Hidden Oaks Campground, where trailers may become trapped if levels approach 18 feet.

Local emergency officials urge drivers to avoid flooded roads and never attempt to bypass barricades. Even shallow water can stall vehicles or sweep them off the roadway. Residents walking near the river should use caution as saturated banks may be unstable.

Water levels should steadily decline through the week, though officials say additional river updates will be issued as conditions change.
