Roanoke, Virginia – Confidence is increasing that a midweek snow event could bring travel disruptions to parts of southwest Virginia, particularly across higher elevations, from Wednesday night into Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, the greatest risk for accumulating snow will be focused across the mountains, where there is a growing probability of measurable snowfall. Current projections show a solid chance for at least 2 inches of snow in mountain communities, with localized areas potentially seeing 6 inches or more depending on how the system evolves.

While snow amounts remain uncertain, forecasters stress that timing could be a key concern. Snow developing Wednesday night and lingering into Thursday morning may impact the early commute, especially along mountain roads, passes, and higher-elevation stretches of Interstate 81 and U.S. Route 460. Locations such as Roanoke, Galax, and nearby mountain counties could see slick roads if snow bands become more persistent.

Lower elevations east of the Blue Ridge, including areas toward the Piedmont, are expected to see lower snow probabilities, though light accumulations cannot be ruled out if the system shifts.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates closely over the next couple of days, review winter travel plans, and be prepared for changing conditions. Forecast confidence is expected to improve as the event draws closer, and winter weather advisories or warnings may be issued if impacts increase.
