Roanoke, VA – The National Weather Service in Blacksburg has issued a Winter Storm Warning for parts of central, south-central, and west-central Virginia, effective from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday. Heavy snow and dangerous travel conditions are expected throughout the day.

According to the NWS, areas including Roanoke, Lynchburg, Bedford, Amherst, Appomattox, Botetourt, and Franklin Counties could receive 3 to 5 inches of snow by Monday evening. Snowfall will begin early in the morning and intensify during peak commute hours, creating slick and icy roads across major routes and local highways.

Forecasters warn that bridges and overpasses will become especially slippery as snow accumulates quickly during the morning commute. Reduced visibility and sudden changes in road conditions will make travel difficult throughout the day.

Officials urge drivers to avoid unnecessary travel if possible and to carry emergency supplies such as food, water, and flashlights. Those who must be on the road should drive cautiously, allow extra travel time, and check Virginia 511 for the latest traffic updates.

Snow is expected to taper off by Monday evening, but temperatures may remain below freezing, increasing the risk of overnight ice on untreated surfaces.
