Roanoke, Virginia – Widespread rain is expected Sunday with precipitation chances up to 70 percent, potentially impacting travel along I-81 and US-220.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, mountain showers will taper by daybreak, followed by near-normal temperatures and dry conditions through the end of the work week. The next storm system approaches Saturday night, bringing a widespread chance of rain to southwest and central Virginia.

Rain probabilities range from around 55 to 70 percent across the region Sunday, including 67 percent near Roanoke, 68 percent near Wytheville, and mid-60 percent chances around Lynchburg and Danville.

Forecasters say rain could be heavy at times Sunday. As temperatures remain near to slightly above freezing in higher elevations, a glaze of ice is possible in the mountains late Saturday night into early Sunday morning. A rain/snow mix may develop Sunday afternoon in elevated terrain before transitioning fully to rain.

Drivers along Interstate 81 from Wytheville through Roanoke, U.S. Route 460 near Blacksburg and Bluefield, and U.S. Route 29 toward Lynchburg should prepare for wet roadways and reduced visibility Sunday. Mountain routes could see slick spots if light icing develops.

Most remaining snow on the ground is expected to melt as temperatures reach into the 40s Sunday. Rain will taper through the day before clearing out by midday Monday, with above-normal temperatures returning.

Commuters, college students, and weekend travelers should monitor updates as the system approaches.
