Blacksburg, Va. – Drivers and outdoor planners south of Roanoke should prepare for patchy rain and overcast skies this Memorial Day, as cooler air and cloud cover dominate the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, skies will remain mostly cloudy Monday, with a 30–40% chance of rain across parts of southern Virginia and northern North Carolina. Rain showers are most likely in the morning and again during the evening hours, particularly in areas like Danville, Martinsville, and South Boston.

Cities including Galax and Hillsville may only see a 10–20% chance of precipitation, while areas closer to the North Carolina border — such as Mount Airy and Reidsville — could see higher rain potential and longer stretches of cloud cover. Temperatures will stay unseasonably cool, reaching only the low 60s to upper 60s during the day and dipping into the upper 40s and low 50s overnight.

Those planning outdoor barbecues or memorial services are urged to keep umbrellas nearby and monitor local radar. Limited sunshine and the potential for wet pavement could affect travel or event plans.

Another update will be issued Monday morning as rain chances evolve throughout the day.
