RIVERTON, Wyo. – Residents across central and western Wyoming should prepare for a sharp overnight cooldown as a Freeze Watch takes effect from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service in Riverton. Lows could dip into the upper 20s to low 30s, bringing the first widespread freeze of the season to the Wind River Basin and nearby foothills.

According to the NWS, the Freeze Watch includes areas such as Lander, Thermopolis, Shoshoni, Worland, and Casper, where frost and freeze conditions may damage crops, outdoor plumbing, and other sensitive vegetation. The agency urges residents to cover tender plants and disconnect garden hoses before temperatures plummet late Monday night.

The cold follows a mild Monday with highs near 60°F and clear skies overnight, allowing heat to escape quickly. Farmers and gardeners across the Bighorn Basin and Johnson County should take action now, as colder valleys may experience even lower temperatures.

Conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday afternoon as sunshine returns and highs climb back into the upper 60s. However, another round of chilly nights could linger midweek before a gradual warm-up by Friday.
