Wyoming’s wide-open basins will turn blustery by midweek, and drivers across the Wind River Basin should prepare now for powerful crosswinds that could shove vehicles off course by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, a High Wind Watch takes effect at 8 a.m. Wednesday and continues through 5 p.m. Gusts may reach 60 mph, with sustained west winds between 25 and 35 mph. The strongest winds are expected from Riverton toward Fort Washakie and northwest across open stretches of highway.
Travel along US-26 and Wyoming Highway 789 could become difficult, especially for semitrailers, campers, and other high-profile vehicles. Sudden gusts often sweep across exposed ridges and open fields with little warning. Secure loose outdoor items Tuesday and avoid unnecessary towing during peak wind hours Wednesday afternoon.
The air feels crisp this morning, with temperatures in the lower 20s under clear skies. Sunshine pushes highs into the lower 50s today and mid-50s Tuesday. A slight chance of rain showers develops Tuesday night, with a brief rain-snow mix possible Wednesday morning before temperatures climb near 57 degrees. Little to no accumulation is expected, but brief slick spots cannot be ruled out if bursts of snow fall early.
Winds ease Wednesday night, and calmer, sunny conditions return Thursday and Friday with highs in the mid to upper 50s. Early signals for late week into the 6–10 day outlook show a warming trend building across Wyoming, hinting at early spring vibes.
