Riverton, WY — Dawn breaks crisp and clear across central Wyoming, but a new December storm is already stirring to the west. Wind gusts between 35 and 50 mph sweep across ridgelines this morning, rattling signs and kicking up thin veils of blowing snow along I-80. Skies stay mostly sunny through mid-day, but the calm won’t last long — another round of snow is forming over the mountains.
Meteorologists with the National Weather Service in Riverton say conditions will worsen by Friday evening, with snow showers spreading east from the Yellowstone and Wind River regions. Travel through the mountain passes — especially Teton, Togwotee, and South Pass — could become slick and visibility sharply reduced. The Jackson and Star Valleys may see 8–12 inches of accumulation through Saturday night, while central basins, including Riverton, may only get a dusting to an inch.
Winds remain strong today and gradually ease by Saturday morning, though patches of fog could form across Yellowstone and the upper valleys. Sunshine briefly returns this weekend with highs in the low 40s, but the next system early next week could bring a rain-snow mix and more travel delays statewide.
