Riverton, Wyo. – Isolated thunderstorms could spark across western and central Wyoming Saturday evening, raising the risk of lightning strikes over the Bighorn Mountains and nearby foothills. While rainfall is expected to remain light, forecasters warn of brief downpours and gusty winds in storm cells.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, the greatest threat lies along and east of the Divide, where storms may flare through late tonight before drier air moves in. The agency noted lightning as the primary hazard, though heavier pockets of rain may briefly reduce visibility on mountain passes and backcountry trails.

Communities from Riverton to Casper may see storms skirt the area, though widespread hazardous weather is not expected. Outdoor recreationists, especially in the Bighorns and Yellowstone region, are urged to seek shelter quickly if storms develop. Lightning can strike miles from a storm core, making exposed ridges and open valleys particularly dangerous.

Conditions stabilize by Sunday, with hot, sunny afternoons expected to dominate much of the week. Labor Day looks mostly clear and warm across the region, a stretch of weather that should hold through midweek.
