RIVERTON, Wyo. – A round of unsettled fall weather is targeting western and central Wyoming through Thursday, with scattered showers, isolated thunderstorms, and mountain snow as cold air slides in midweek. Rain chances increase Tuesday night, spreading east into the Wind River Basin and nearby foothills by Wednesday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, the greatest coverage of showers and storms is expected in western counties, including the Yellowstone and Absaroka regions, where snow levels may fall as low as 7,000 feet Wednesday night. Travelers heading over Togwotee and South Pass should prepare for wet roads and slushy spots above timberline.

Showers will continue into Thursday, with highs cooling into the lower 50s. Winds may gust near 20 mph in the Wind River Basin as the system exits. Though most lower elevations will remain rain only, light snow accumulation is possible along higher ridges of the Wind River and Bighorn Mountains.

Drivers on U.S. 26 and WY-789 should plan for reduced visibility in heavier showers and possible slick conditions early Thursday. Ranchers and hunters in the mountains should monitor conditions closely and pack extra layers and emergency supplies.

According to forecasters, skies will clear late Thursday night, bringing a much drier and brighter stretch for the weekend. Daytime highs should rebound into the upper 50s to low 60s by Saturday under full sunshine.
