RIVERTON, Wyo. – The western sky glows red before dawn, a telltale warning that Wyoming’s late-October pattern is turning volatile. Gusty southwest winds already sweep through the Wind River Basin this morning, and higher peaks west of Riverton are bracing for accumulating snow through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service in Riverton, Winter Storm Warnings and Advisories remain in effect for the western mountains, including the Tetons, Absarokas, and Wind Rivers, through Monday afternoon. Heavy mountain snow combined with gusty winds could create difficult travel on mountain passes like Togwotee and South Pass, where visibility will drop quickly in blowing snow.
Across the lower elevations, Riverton and nearby towns will stay dry through most of Sunday but turn cloudier and windier this evening. A few rain showers could mix with flakes in the foothills before skies clear again by early Monday. Gusts may reach 35 mph, especially along U.S. 26 and Highway 789. Monday will stay breezy with highs near 51°F before a sharp chill sets in Monday night, dropping lows into the 20s under clear skies.
By Tuesday, calmer conditions return with crisp sunshine and highs in the upper 40s — ideal for fall yard cleanup or Halloween setup later in the week. The quiet pattern holds through Friday, though another cold front looms just beyond Halloween, possibly ushering in the state’s next snowmaker and a much colder start to November.
