Richmond, VA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for central and southern Virginia, including the Richmond metro area, through 8 a.m. Saturday, as a mix of freezing drizzle, freezing fog, and black ice could create hazardous driving conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Wakefield.

The advisory covers areas along and west of I-85 and VA-360, where a light glaze of ice is possible overnight. Meteorologists say the danger lies in the thin, nearly invisible layer of ice that forms on roadways, making it one of winter’s “sneakiest” and most dangerous weather hazards.

Drivers are urged to slow down, avoid using cruise control, and leave extra space between vehicles—especially on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads where icing will develop first. Any leftover snow or slush from earlier in the week could also refreeze as temperatures fall below freezing.

The NWS notes medium confidence in the potential for light freezing drizzle, but warns even a trace of ice can make travel treacherous. Conditions are expected to improve late Saturday morning as temperatures rise.

Residents are encouraged to stay weather-aware overnight and check road conditions before heading out early Saturday.
