Richmond, Virginia – Drivers in the Richmond metro area should prepare for potentially slick road conditions Sunday as a light snow event develops during the day and tapers off by Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, precipitation is expected to begin as rain Sunday morning before transitioning to snow as colder air filters in from the north. Snow accumulations around Richmond are currently projected to remain light, generally up to around 1 inch, with the best potential north and northeast of the city.

Even light snowfall could create travel issues, especially as temperatures cool during the afternoon and evening. Roads such as Interstate 95, Interstate 64, Route 360, and Route 60 could become slick, particularly on bridges, overpasses, and untreated secondary roads. Reduced traction is most likely late Sunday afternoon into Sunday evening as snow tapers off and refreezing begins.

Farther northeast toward the Northern Neck and Eastern Shore, slightly higher snow totals are possible, while areas south of Richmond may see more rain than snow. Still, localized heavier bursts could briefly coat roadways in the metro area.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel late Sunday if conditions worsen. While snowfall is expected to end Sunday night, lingering icy patches could persist into early Monday morning. Additional updates may be issued as confidence increases in snowfall amounts and timing.
