RICHMOND, Va. – Sunshine and comfortable 80s return across much of Virginia today, but coastal residents should remain on alert for dangerous conditions in the wake of Hurricane Erin.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the storm has moved well into the northern Atlantic, allowing drier air to filter across the state. Skies will clear with mild humidity and light afternoon breezes, keeping inland highs in the lower 80s from Richmond to Petersburg.

Along the shoreline, however, the threat lingers. Despite Erin’s departure, tidal flooding, beach erosion, and a high risk of rip currents are expected to persist through multiple tide cycles. Emergency officials urge swimmers to stay out of the surf and remind drivers near low-lying roads in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and the Eastern Shore to watch for flooding during high tide.

Farmville and South Hill should see highs near 82 degrees under partly sunny skies, while Norfolk, Williamsburg, and Franklin top out around 83. Conditions statewide will remain comfortable into the evening, though coastal communities will need to stay vigilant.

Coastal hazard advisories remain in place through the weekend as rip currents and tidal flooding continue. Updates will be issued if conditions worsen.
