RICHMOND, Va. – Thunderstorms returning to Virginia this afternoon could cause localized flash flooding, especially in low-lying and urban areas, as downpours intensify between 2 p.m. and 10 p.m. Friday. Some neighborhoods may see rapid street flooding if 1–2 inches of rain falls in a short burst.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, storm coverage will be less widespread than Thursday, but isolated showers and thunderstorms will still develop across central and eastern parts of the state. Most communities will see a quarter-inch of rain or less, but heavier cells could trigger brief, intense rainfall capable of overwhelming drainage systems.

Drivers in Richmond, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and surrounding suburbs should watch for water pooling on roads, especially during the late afternoon commute. Low-lying roads, underpasses, and intersections prone to flooding could become impassable with little warning. The risk is greatest where soils are already saturated from Thursday’s rain.

Residents are urged to avoid driving through standing water, keep storm drains clear, and monitor alerts through the evening. The Weather Service advises that additional advisories may be issued if storms strengthen.
