Richmond, Virginia – Two rounds of light winter weather are being monitored across Virginia and northeast North Carolina, with snow possible at times from tonight through early Thursday.

According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the first round of snow may develop later tonight into Wednesday morning, mainly north of the Interstate 64 corridor. Forecasters say most areas will see little to no accumulation, though a coating to less than one inch is possible. The best chance of around 1 inch is across the Maryland Eastern Shore, where snow could persist slightly longer.

A second round of snow is possible Wednesday afternoon into early Thursday morning, mainly south of I-64. While accumulations are expected to remain light for most locations, meteorologists caution that a narrow band of 1 to 2 inches could develop from southern Virginia into northeast North Carolina, depending on how the system evolves.

Major travel corridors potentially affected include Interstate 64, Interstate 95, U.S. Route 13, U.S. Route 17, and Interstate 264, particularly during overnight and early-morning hours. Even light snowfall could result in minor travel issues, as temperatures are expected to drop below freezing Wednesday night, increasing the risk of icy patches on bridges and overpasses.

The National Weather Service emphasized that forecast confidence remains low, especially regarding the placement of the heavier snow band during the second round. Small shifts in the system could significantly change where the highest totals occur.

Drivers are encouraged to remain cautious, slow down on slick roads, and allow extra travel time, particularly during the Wednesday morning and Thursday morning commutes.

Students, early-shift workers, and commuters traveling along I-64 and I-95 should monitor updates closely as details become clearer.

This outlook is based on forecast guidance issued Tuesday afternoon and will be refined as newer data become available.
