Richmond, Virginia – Temperatures are rising into the 40s across much of eastern Virginia and northeast North Carolina today, bringing increased melting before the next weather system approaches the region tonight.

According to the National Weather Service office in Wakefield, clouds will increase through the day ahead of an incoming system that may bring light snow to northern portions of the forecast area late tonight. Areas south of Interstate 64 are expected to see mainly rain initially, while locations closer to and north of I-64 could see light snow accumulations of less than 1 inch.

Major travel corridors including I-64, I-95, US-17, and US-58 are expected to remain mostly wet during the day as temperatures climb. However, conditions could change late tonight as colder air moves in and precipitation transitions to snow in some areas, particularly north of Richmond and toward the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.

The National Weather Service also notes the potential for a narrow band of heavier snow developing Wednesday evening into Wednesday night across southern Virginia and northeast North Carolina. If this band materializes, localized snowfall amounts of 1 to 2 inches would be possible, though forecasters emphasize there is significant uncertainty regarding its placement and development.

Because of melting during the day, any snow accumulation tonight is expected to be limited, but slick spots could develop on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads, especially during overnight and early-morning hours. Motorists traveling along I-64 near Richmond and Williamsburg or along I-95 through central Virginia should remain alert for changing road conditions.

This system may be most noticeable for overnight drivers, early commuters, and freight traffic. Forecast updates are expected as confidence increases regarding Wednesday night snow potential.
