Richmond, Virginia – Temperatures across eastern Virginia are expected to drop quickly Friday as a backdoor cold front moves south through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, the front moved into the area Friday morning and will continue pushing southward through the afternoon and evening.
Ahead of the front, some communities across southern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina could still see spring-like warmth with afternoon highs reaching the 70s and even lower 80s.
However, areas north of the front will experience significantly cooler conditions, with temperatures holding mainly in the 40s and 50s.
Cities including Richmond, Williamsburg, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake will likely see temperatures fall during the afternoon as the cooler air spreads south.
Drivers traveling along major routes such as Interstate 64, Interstate 95, and U.S. Route 58 may notice changing conditions as the front passes, including increasing cloud cover and a noticeable drop in temperatures.
Forecasters say cloudy skies will develop behind the front, and there is a small chance for isolated light showers later in the afternoon, although most areas are expected to remain dry.
As cooler air settles in overnight, areas of fog may develop, potentially reducing visibility during the late-night and early Saturday morning hours.
Temperatures will vary significantly across the region depending on location relative to the front.
Communities north of the boundary will remain much cooler, while locations to the south may hold onto warmer temperatures longer before the colder air arrives.
Residents across eastern Virginia should be prepared for rapid temperature changes and cloudier conditions as the front moves through the region today.
