Richmond, VA – A powerful Arctic air mass is expected to surge into Virginia late next week, delivering subzero wind chills, single-digit lows, and bitterly cold mornings between Thursday, December 11, and Monday, December 15. Cities including Richmond, Roanoke, Norfolk, and Charlottesville are forecast to experience the sharpest temperature drop next weekend.
According to the National Weather Service Wakefield, temperatures will plunge behind a strong cold front Thursday night, with morning lows in the teens to single digits statewide and wind chills falling below zero in western and central Virginia. Higher elevations in the Blue Ridge may see wind chills between –10°F and –15°F, posing serious risks to anyone outdoors for long periods.
Forecasters expect the Arctic pattern to remain mostly dry, though light snow flurries are possible in the mountains as cold air deepens. Despite the lack of major snow, blustery winds and freezing air will make travel and outdoor activities hazardous.
Residents are urged to bundle up, protect pets and pipes, and limit outdoor exposure during the coldest periods. Emergency management officials recommend checking home heating systems and vehicle batteries in advance of the temperature plunge.
The extreme cold is expected to linger through Monday, December 16, before a slow warming trend midweek.
