Richmond, VA – After a sweltering July packed with 90-degree scorchers, August has delivered a refreshing change across Virginia and the Mid-Atlantic. With just days left in the month, cities like Salisbury, Maryland and Elizabeth City, North Carolina are on pace to record one of their top 10 coolest Augusts in history.
According to the National Weather Service in Wakefield, average temperatures across the region have been running 3 to 4 degrees below normal. Salisbury currently ranks 4th coolest, while Elizabeth City holds 8th place. Richmond may squeeze into the top 10 depending on the final days of the month. Norfolk, while cooler, won’t break any records but still logged significantly fewer 90°+ days compared to previous years.
Richmond has seen only 4 days at or above 90°F so far this August—well below the normal 12. Norfolk recorded just 2 such days. The trend is expected to continue with daytime highs mostly in the upper 70s to low 80s under partly to mostly sunny skies through Labor Day weekend.
No heat advisories are expected, but those planning outdoor activities should still stay hydrated. Updates will follow if forecast conditions shift heading into September.
