Norfolk, Virginia – Strong wind gusts up to 55 mph are impacting coastal and inland roadways Sunday morning.

According to the National Weather Service Wakefield, elevated winds are expected to continue today, Sunday, as a coastal low-pressure system strengthens offshore. Forecast guidance shows gusts of 30 to 40 mph across inland areas, including stretches of Interstate 95, while coastal locations near I-64 and I-264 could experience gusts between 45 and 55 mph.

Meteorologists said the strongest winds are likely during the morning and midday hours, particularly in exposed areas such as bridges, overpasses, and coastal roadways in Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Hampton, and Chesapeake. Drivers of high-profile vehicles may notice difficult travel conditions along major corridors.

The National Weather Service also warned that areas which received snowfall Saturday could see blowing snow overnight and into early Sunday, briefly reducing visibility on roadways, especially along secondary roads and open stretches near waterways. While no new snowfall is expected in this update, lingering snow combined with strong gusts may create localized travel hazards.

Maximum wind gust forecasts shared by NWS Wakefield show elevated wind potential persisting through tonight before gradually diminishing. Officials emphasized that isolated power interruptions and downed tree limbs are possible in the windiest locations.

Commuters, young workers, and students traveling along I-64, I-264, I-664, and I-95 are encouraged to allow extra travel time and use caution, particularly during the morning hours.

No additional watches or warnings were issued with this update. The National Weather Service noted conditions will be monitored closely as the system continues offshore.
